Sandhurst’s First Pakistani Instructor Major Uqbah Malik

Pakistan Army has a long-standing relatiosn with the world famous Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in England.

The place is a centre for training for British Army Officers and each year selected overseas cadets also enrol in the academy.

This year Major Uqbah Hadeed Malik made history by becoming the first Pakistani Officer to become a Platoon Commander at Sandhurst, training the British Armed Forces.

He also become the first Muslim ever to command and instruct a British Commissioning course, since the inception of the British Army.

Major Uqbah Malik (son of retired Brig.Hadeed Anwer Malik) graduated from the Military College in Jhelum, his parent unit is the 1st Sindh Regiment.

In May 2006 he started his training at Sandhurst, his passing out parade was in April 2007.

He was awarded the highly prestigious ‘Overseas Sword of Honour’, for being the best overseas cadet. His training period coincided with Prince William’s time at Sandhurst. Both are fond of playing polo.

Major Uqbah Malik’s service in Pakistan led him to successfully countering terrorism in Waziristan and attachments on the Pakistan/India border areas.

These are experiences where key leadership skills were reinforced, which are now imparted to future commissioned officers.

Major Uqbah Malik’s presence provides an excellent opportunity for cementing an ongoing partnership between Pakistan and Britain, which historically can be traced back to undivided India since 1857.

Indeed it is a great honour not only for Major Uqbah Malik but also for the Pakistan Armed Forces. A recognition of  their professional capabilities on an international level.
