The Politics of Agitation

It seems that the underlying sentiment prevailing in Pakistani politics today, especially with respect to the opposition parties of our country is that of agitation and civil unrest. There is little doubt that a healthy opposition is crucial and provides much needed credibility and impetus to any Government in power. Though, in this particular case in point, this is just going beyond of what is essentially equivalent of “having their cake and eat it too”. Point being, is that while clearly Nawaz’s Government might be at fault and had made some major irrevocable mistakes (Model town Tragedy of Lahore) intentionally or unintentionally during their short stint in power. However, branding the whole electoral process of 2013’s election as impotent and rigged is just simply going beyond the confines of sanity and common sense.

Additionally, they are adding insult to injury by asking for a mid-term election, this is asking too much out of the fragile democracy of Pakistan.Democracy in Pakistan has just started to take its roots after many years of prolonged dictatorial and illegitimate regimes.

Lest, we witness yet again as mere bystanders and spectate another overthrow of the Government by the hands of the military that would set us another 10 years back democratically. The system needs to be permitted to let it run its due course. That’s how the oldest of democracies in the world have done it, via trial and error without any abrupt changes in their regimes and violent pseudo revolutions.

PTI amongst other opposition parties who’re resisting the Government needs to analyze the situation and pay heed to the general public sentiment, which grows increasingly tired and weary from this kind of politics.  Imran Khan and TahirUlQadri amongst other politicians (Shaikh Rasheedetc.) needs to tread very cautiously as this ominous “Inqilab” of theirs could very well make an already inflammable situation that much more combustible.

Perhaps the most damning indictment of their so called political acumen and shrewdness can be to gaining political mileage at this sensitive hour. Gaining political mileage at this hour when the country is seeing the ripple effect of the much needed Zarb-e-Azb operation can only exasperate an already complex situation at hand. It would not only send mixed signals nationally but to the international community as well, which bye the way already sees Pakistan as a powder keg and a tinder box just waiting to be lit up. Rather than projecting through to the world and especially to our ill-wishers how united we stand as a nation, unflinching and resolute in our demeanor, we are showing them, how divided we are, this will further alienate us among the comity of nations.

It is not the right time for the usual rhetoric, we’re at war, at war with ourselves whether we would like to admit it or not. This might be just be the last strand that would inevitably and God forbid push us into all out chaos, civil war and pandemonium.

Opposition parties as a whole should learn a chapter or two from the political doctrine of Asif Ali Zardari. Although politically expedient and Machiavellian in his approach he might’ve been during his stint as the President, he was flexible nonetheless, willing to sit down with his most ardent of rivals. These people are anything but! Unwilling to set aside, their towering egos.

When these politicians will quit treating Pakistan as their personal politicking incubators in order to test which strategy/move of theirs will and will not work?

For the sake of the common Pakistanis who’re living in abject poverty, failing to make their ends meet. I pray that by some miracle, these politicians have an epiphany. An epiphany to make them gets rid of their god complexes and Infallibility. To make them realize that they may not be the promised messiahs that we Pakistanis need to be saved from our miseries!
