Altaf Hussain – a leader with immense public support

I was there last night when history was written. I had seen men, women, children, old and young crying like anything. The joy, the happiness and the passion was worth watching. I must confess that I had never witnessed anything like this my entire life.

Minutes after the news of Altaf Hussain surfaced, a huge number of men, women and children started their voyage towards Numaish Chowrangi in Karachi where the MQM’s sit in was in progress for the past 4 days. It’s worth mentioning that thousands were already there before a huge number of people started to show up minutes after the release of Mr. Hussain.

I stood there in a corner watching MQM workers and supporters hug each other congratulating on the release of their Leader Mr. Hussain. Many had tears in their eyes. Hundreds were in the praying area praying to Allah and thanking him. The youth was fully charged chanting slogans, praising Altaf Hussain. Nevertheless, every one present there was living that emotional moment of happiness.

The wait was getting longer as the news confirmed the arrival of Mr. Hussain at MQM’s HQ in London. The rise of dawn was there when one loud voice filled everyone’s passion with a life that said “Please welcome our Quaid Mr. Altaf Hussain”. I cannot be biased at this moment but the truth is I saw people live again. I saw oldies getting younger. I saw children screaming “Bus Altaf Sirf Altaf” (Only Altaf). I saw the youngsters raising their flags in the air.

The famous anthem of MQM “Mazloomon Ka Sathi” was played which was sung by almost everyone present there. It’s necessary to mention here that I did not feel any difference between MQM officials and its supporters. They all stood together singing Mazloomon Ka Sathi. Their roar was so high and zealous that I thought in my head “It’s the end for feudalism in Pakistan”.

Later on, the loud and ardent slogans of workers welcomed the first voice of Mr. Altaf Hussain after his release. Not to mention the great admitted discipline of workers and supporters. The crowd of thousands broke into pin drop silence. Mr. Hussain started his speech by telling his he has faced tough conditions like his arrest in the past and came out victorious. Hard to discuss everything he said but it was a speech that brought happiness all around.

That night I realized that two hundred and fifty thousand pounds don’t mean anything for the supporters and workers of Mr. Hussain. The people present there were ready to sacrifice everything on their beloved leader, money was just the least. If every worker of Mr. Hussain had donated him a single penny, it could become much bigger than what the total money laundering case was about. The history leads back to some politicians from Pakistan lobbying for politically motivated cases against Mr. Hussain in the United Kingdom with alliance of some members of the house of Lords.

I know that it is very hard to accept the reality of Mr. Hussain for those who have never seen a common man as their leader. From Altaf Hussain being the leader to common people getting elected on the ticket of MQM is itself a revolution. It’s obvious that the trend set for politicians and leaders in Pakistan does not suits a party like MQM and a leader like Mr. Hussain hence all the conspiracies.

I learned something that Nations can live again, and I have seen Mr. Hussain making one do it last night.
