Earthquake- 26th October 2015

A deadly earthquake hit northern Afghanistan and Pakistan on Monday afternoon around 2:09pm according to PST, registering a preliminary magnitude of 8.1 at the Richter scale and causing heavy damage. The earthquake was centred in the Hindu Kush mountain range, about 28 miles southwest of the district of Jurm in Afghanistan and about 160 miles northeast of Kabul, the Afghan capital. The quake’s depth was reported at 132 miles, the United States Geological Survey official said and its effects were felt as far away as United Arab Emirates, Tajikistan and New Delhi.

At least 260 people were reported killed, with 220 or more of them in Pakistan, along with more than 1200 injured and that figure seemed likely to rise significantly, officials in both countries said.

This earthquake is the biggest natural disaster in the history of Pakistan and the second one in October, after the 8th October 2005 one.

People poured into the streets of Islamabad, Peshawar Rawalpindi, Lahore and other central and northern areas of Pakistan. The same situation was seen in Kabul. The buildings shook for at least two minutes. Officials in both countries declared emergencies, and military units were ordered to join the response.

The cellular networks, broadband, WiFi, electricity system and telephone lines were badly affected after the news spread around the world.

The Army Chief of Pakistan, General Raheel Sharif reached Peshawar and was given a briefing at Peshawar.

COAS Raheel Sharif also ordered the armed forces to go to the remote areas and ensure relief activities of affected families for the Quake victims.

According to a former National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) official, aftershocks are expected to occur in the due course and the people should stay alert.

The major affected province due to earthquake is Khyber PakhtoonKhuwa whose chief minister Pervaiz Khattak visited Lady Reading Hospital, which is the only big hospital in the province. The CM KPK visited to ensure if proper treatment is being given to the affectees and how much the disaster has caused casualties. He also told VIPs and media officials not to visit hospital to affect the management of hospital and divert attention from quake victims.

Imran Khan, chairman Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf will also visit Peshawar tomorrow. While on the other hand Prime Minister of Pakistan, Mian Nawaz Sharif who is currently in London for his personal visithas cut short his trip and will soon be back to help his country.

This earthquake is again the time this nation will unite. The irony of Pakistan is that on all platforms we unite only in disasters.
