‘Song of Lahore’, Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy’s Cultural Masterpiece!
Unquestionably, our country is so much more than just mere politics and entertainment. However, the cultural aspect is often lost somewhere in between the lines. But no matter who we blame, there are some audacious individuals out there who have highlighted Pakistan’s culture on a global platform and Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy is one of those brave few.
Chinoy’s recent documentary film ‘Song of Lahore’ premiered at the 14th Annual Tribecca Film Festival and received two standing ovations. Sharmeen even expressed her deepest joy for the film via a short tweet that was published two days ago on Twitter. The documentary centers on a small community of Lahore that was famous for its music until 1970s. The film sheds light on Pakistan’s cultural heritage and its abandonment by the society with the passage of time.
In 2004, Izzat Majeed founded Sachal Studios in an effort to revive Pakistan’s traditional music. ‘Song of Lahore’ has generated much critical acclaim and nominations for some prestigious events. However, many fans believe this documentary will not make it to the Emmys or the Oscars. But in all honesty, not every film is meant for lavish award ceremonies. One should always consider the message being delivered in a project, and that is all that matters.
