This blog is in reference to an episode of ARY’s famous crime show Sare Aam that aired a few weeks back, that was a real eye opener indeed. The topic was ‘jaisi qaum waisay hukmaraan’. And it really got me thinking. Who doesn’t think of revolution? Who doesn’t think of changing the world? Who doesn’t curse the government for their ignorance? Who doesn’t point out the wrong in others? That’s what we do… in fact, that’s ALL we do!

It’s easy to sit home and mock people but hard to realize the ignorance on your part. Everyone thinks of changing the world but who really thinks of changing himself? Corruption has become a part of our everyday lives. And it’s not just a case pending in court neither is it only limited to governor houses and parliaments. It has found its way to our markets and work places too. The person on the petrol pump that takes advantage of your lack of attention and gives you half of what you paid for, the journalist who sells the credibility of his newspaper for a few thousand rupees, the mechanic who charges Rs.2500 to repair a fridge with absolutely nothing wrong with it and the invigilator who takes money to let candidates cheat in an exam do not belong to the government. They are part of what we call the ‘bechaari awaam’, which is suppressed by heavy taxation, inflation and endless load shedding. But why shouldn’t they be? Isn’t this what we deserve after what we have become? Zara sochiye!

Another mistake on our part is ‘silence’. Silence over all that is happening around us. Silence over evil. Silence over oppression. If something wrong is happening then our silence is what lets it go on. Sick people produce evil and silent people breed it. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said “The ultimate tragedy is not the oppression and cruelty by the bad people but the silence over that by the good people.” Those who exploit the poor are guilty and those who remain silent over the oppression share the crime. A positive change within every individual in the society will bring revolution. As it is famously said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful citizens can’t change the world. In fact, it’s the only thing that ever has.”
