Let’s talk about curing depression!

With increasing cases of suicide everywhere, the major cause behind this act is depression, a common illness which negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and the way you act.

Its causes can be many including abuse of any kind, death or loss of loved ones, conflicts, loneliness, distorted families, personal problems, being bullied and so.

It is believed that more than 70% of suicides in Pakistan among teenagers have depression as one of the leading factors. This is an alarming situation which requires dire need of attention, so let’s talk about curing depression.
Exercise your body and mind.

Depression is treatable in discrete ways without medication, Research has shown that exercise, sports, yoga and physical activities even dancing encounters the same neurophysiological changes as antidepressants.

If you feel like you’re falling into the abyss of depression and you want to help yourself, get out in to the nature and breath, a walk around the park will work or playing with the kids in your street will be fun.

Add gardening to the list of your hobbies because it can provide much more than adding beauty to your yard, it has been proven to reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and lower cholesterol and decrease depression.

Painting relieves stress

Drawing and art can take your mind off of what’s stressing you. Activities like painting, sculpting, sketching can be very relaxing but for those who don’t feel artistic but want to create easy, beautiful and stress free pictures, they can enjoy some of the adult coloring books that have become popular.
Let’s take an example of the inspiring story of Muniba Mazari.

She is the UN women ambassador, Pakistani artist, activist, motivational speaker and television host who is known as an iron lady. In 2007 while heading home she met a dreadful accident that made her paraplegic for entire life. She spend 2 years in hospital bed and those were the most difficult years of her life.

She felt helpless. She used to chop her hair off, in frustration, when they used to get stuck in hair brush.

When she needed her loved one the most, her husband divorced her and father abandoned her.

By the encouragement of doctors, she started her old passion, Painting, which gave her a sense of calmness, joy and serenity.

Through which she put herself together, held on to her spirit and became an inspiration for others.

Eat Healthy

Depression can take a toll on your body’s natural defenses, but eating the right food can offer relief. Leafy green veggies and nuts are rich in stress-busting magnesium and should be consumed more often.

Drinking herbal teas like chamomile, peppermint or ginger can be wonderfully soothing and calming for the nervous system in your gut. Add a little more red pepper to your taste which not only lowers blood pressure but helps you cope.

Oatmeal is warm and comforting—and it also helps your brain generate the distressing neurotransmitter serotonin.

Eating dark chocolate is good for your memory, blood pressure and mood. It helps alleviate depression and acts as an anti-inflammatory, which means it is good for your brain.

Speak up!

Talk yourself out with a good friend. This is one of the imperative ways to lift off your burdens. Listen to other people’s stories and you’ll find out that you’re not the only one who’s facing hardships or who thinks life hasn’t been fair.

By doing so you’ll be able to learn from them and cope with what you’re going through.

Music is the medicine of the mind

From the earliest of civilization, music has been used to heal the body and soul, and to express what is difficult to articulate in words. Music is known to affect mood and listening to music or creating it, can work to alleviate depression. Another example of a 16 year old cancer survivor Caly Bevier who auditioned at ‘America’s got talent’, teaches us an exhilarating lesson. At this young age she had to go through a painful process of chemo therapy, her dreams were shattered, teenage fantasies turned into harsh realities. She shared her experience by saying, “I tried to stay happy, always had my headphones on and listened to songs. Singing songs made me feel happy and helped me fight cancer.”

Add color to your life

Literally add colors to your life by decorating your room and surrounding by colorful things.

Colors have this amazing power to make you feel happy and fresh. Put flowers in your room, slide curtains aside and let sunshine brighten your room because those who like being in the dark have a gloomy selfhood. In the end when you find yourself hopeless,

It’s high time  you connect yourself with the Almighty God  because he cares for you.

Spirituality can also help deal with mental distress and provides a way of coping in addition to your own mental resilience.
