Cause of The Universe

Have you ever asked yourself where the universe came from, was there a beginning to the universe or it goes back and back forever.

Typically, naturalists (adherents of the belief that nature is all that exists, and that all things supernatural like God, therefore do not exist) say that the universe is just eternal which means having infinite past and uncaused and that’s all. But there are good reasons both philosophical and scientific to doubt that this is the case.

“Infinity” is often treated as a number (i.e., it counts or measures things: “an infinite number of terms”) but it is not the same sort of number as either a natural or a realnumber. A number greater than any assignable quantity or countable number (symbol ∞).

Does infinity really exist?

Philosophically the idea of an infinite past is very problematic, think about it, the universe had no beginning that means number of past event in the universe is infinite but existence of actual number of infinite things lead to metaphysical(relating to branch of philosophy that deals with the first principles of things, including abstract concepts such as being, knowing, identity, time, and space) absurdity.

For example, what is infinity minus infinity, well mathematically, you get self contradictory answers, for example, if you have an infinite number of coins number one, two, three and so on to infinity and I took away all the odd number coins, how many coins you have left, well, you still got all the even number coins, right or an infinity of coins.

So infinity minus infinity is equal to infinity but now suppose instead that I took away all coins number greater than three, so, infinity minus infinity is three and yet in each case I took away identical number of coins from an identical number of coins and came up with contradictory results, in fact you can get any answer mathematically when you subtract infinity from infinity, from zero to infinity and for that reason inverse operations like subtraction and division are prohibited in transfinite number but that convention doesn’t apply to real world, you can give whatever number of coins you want.

This show infinity is just a concept or idea in your mind not something that exists in reality. David Hilbert who is perhaps greatest mathematician of 19th and 20th century says that infinity is not found anywhere it neither exist in nature nor provide any rational basis of evidence, the role of infinity is only as an idea.

Does Universe have a beginning?

Yes, of course as past events are not just an idea like infinity discussed above but real that entails number of past events must be finite, therefore, series of past event can not go back forever or cannot be infinite.

Rather universe must have began to exist, this purely philosophical conclusion has been confirmed by remarkable discoveries in astronomy( the branch of science which deals with celestial objects, space, and the physical universe as a whole) and astrophysics( the branch of astronomy concerned with the physical nature of stars and other celestial bodies, and the application of the laws and theories of physics to the interpretation of astronomical observations) in one of startling development of modern science, we now have pretty strong evidence that universe is not eternal in past but has an absolute beginning, a finite time ago for all matter and energy, even physical space and time itself came into being at a point in finite past as cosmologist( a scientist who studies the universe) P.C.W. Davies said that the coming into being of universe is discussed in modern science is not just a matter of imposing an organization on previous incoherence state but literally the coming into being of all physical things from nothing. Now of course alternate theories had been proposed for this to avoid this absolute beginning but none of these theories have commended itself to majority of scientific community.

In fact, in 2003, Arvind Borde, Alan Guth, and Alexander Vilenkin published highly influential scientific research paper arguing that inflationary model of universe ( a version of the big bang theory in which the universe underwent very rapid growth during the first fraction of a second before it settled down to its current rate of expansion and the universe is expanding continously) cannot be ‘past eternal’ known as the Borde-Guth-Vilenkin Theorem and were even able to proof any universe which is on average in state of cosmic expansion through out his history cannot be eternal in past but must have past space-time boundary.

The universe, after all has a beginning!

Cosmologist( a scientist who studies the universe) Alexander Vilenkin also stated that it is said that an argument convinces a reasonable man and proof is what convinces even an unreasonable man with the proof now in place, he said cosmologist ( a scientist who studies the universe) could no longer hide behind possibility of past eternal universe, there is no escape, they have to face problem that universe has a beginning.

That problem was nicely captured by Anthony Kenny of Oxford University when he wrote that a proponent of Big Bang theory( a theory that the universe originated billions of years ago in an explosion) at least if is an atheist(a person who doesn’t believe in existence of God) must belief that the universe came from nothing and by nothing and it is not eternal.

Did anything come out from nothing?

No, surely that doesn’t make sense for such a conclusion is in the words of philosopher of science Bernulf Kanitscheider heads on to collision with most successful ontological(relating to the philosophical study of the nature of being, becoming, existence, or reality, as well as the basiccategories of being and their relations) commitment of science namely the metaphysical (relating to branch of philosophy that deals with the first principles of things, including abstract concepts such as being, knowing, identity, time, and space) principle that out of nothing, nothing comes.

Why does Universe exist?

So, why does universe exist instead of saying that universe just come from nothing, where it comes from?, there must have been a cause that brought the universe in being. We can summarize the argument by following points:

1) Whatever begin to exist must have a cause.

2) The universe began to exist.

3) Therefore, universe has a cause.

Than Universe must have a cause!

Giving the truth of two premises above point 1 and 2, the conclusion point 3 necessary follows.

What type of Cause is it?

What sort of cause is this, this cause must be an uncaused, changeless, timeless and an immaterial being which created the universe.

It must be Uncaused! Why?
It must be uncaused because we have seen, there cannot be an infinite regress( a sequence of reasoning or justification which can never come to an end) of causes(as we have discussed above that infinity is just an idea not a reality), so we come to an absolutely finite uncaused cause. He caused everything but nothing caused him.

Must be timeless and therefore changeless! Why?

It must be timeless therefore changeless, atleast without the universe because it created time. A being which was present before the time was created is timeless.

Must be immaterial! Why?

It created space also, it must transcend space as well and therefore be immaterial not physical.

The Cause is Personal!

This cause probably also be personal. Ask yourself, how can a timeless cause gives rise to temporarily fact with a beginning like universe if the cause was just mechanically operating set of necessary and efficient conditions than the cause cannot exist without its effect, once the sufficient condition is given, the effect must be given.

For example, suppose the cause of water to freeze is the temperature being below zero degree centigrade, if the temperature is zero degree below from eternity past than the water is freeze from eternity, it would be impossible for water to just begun freeze infinite time ago for the cause must be permanently present, it effect must be permanently present as well, the only way for a cause to be timeless and for its effect to begin a finite time ago is for cause to be a personal agent, who has ability to spontaneously create a new effects without any antecedent determining condition.

For example, a man who is being sitting from an eternity could freely will to stand up and thus we would have an effect. Beginning arise from an eternal cause and thus we are brought nearly to transcendent cause of universe but to its personal creator.

Therefore, the Universe has a cause and that cause is God.
