Recently I got a chance to watch “13 reasons Why”, a popular teen series on Netflix.
The series is an instant hit among youth because of its mysterious story- the story of Hannah Baker, a high school student who commits suicide and through the tapes reveals the 13 reasons why she took her own life.
The tapes reveal each and every detail of Hannah’s life and the incidents that led to her suicide.
13 Reasons Why brings in an important issue of suicide into the spotlight, but more than that in my opinion it brings in light the causes— loss of communication and the loss of some basic moral values such as truth, honesty respect and affection in society.
The series which people are dying to watch episode after episode or may be a whole season in a way go are according to me treating this series as merely another common story and putting blinkers to what the main idea this series is holding.
While watching the series the question that repeatedly pops up in my head, why Hannah felt the need to record all that she just simply say to her teachers, friends and most importantly her parents? Her act of recording may seem pretty simple and okay for viewers but behind this act some strong message is lying— lack of communication.
Why would a dead girl lie? The truth comes out 3/31 on Netflix. #13ReasonsWhy

The word “depression” is a very common term we use for a person who commits suicide. But what we fail to realize is what factor that has build up this situation?.
Lack of communication is one the highlighted factor throughout the series. Hannah’s thoughts of being lost or becoming invisible are some strong feelings and may be a cry of many people around us which should not go unheard behind this veil of entertainment.
Throughout the story we could see loss of communication between Hannah and her parents.
Hannah is unable to convey her thoughts or to tell what is happening with her in the school until and unless her mother Mrs. Baker finally finds out that Hannah is bullied after her death.
Here, the responsibility falls on both parents and children.
The most important thing that a teenager needs to know the parents are always there to help you when the time you behave unreasonably.
They might not express their love in so many words, and may even scold you but at the end of the day, you are their priority.
Some children do not open up easily even to their parents. For parents —be available to them always. Better not to interrupt them when they are in the middle of a conversation.
The lack of communication is what leads one to depression
In my opinion Hannah is a girl of some solid moral principles and throughout the story Hannah feels and remains unconnected to her surrounding because of these principles.
Hannah at point says “when you do something wrong you just can’t ignore it and walk away” — and that’s what we exactly do in this posh society of ours.
This story stands as a powerful mirror to the society where we put a brave face to hide our wrongdoings instead of facing them and usually crosses the limit in order to cover them up
. The Liberty High School as representative of society depicts the true horrors of suicide, bullying, and sexual assault without the basis for hope.
This reminds me of Jonathan Swift as he says “Human brutes, like other beasts, find snares and poison in the provision of life, and are allured by their appetites to their destruction.”
As a society we all are running behind wealth, power and status and this has taken us away from culture and social norms. And this can be clearly seen through this piece of the story.
Providing our children with expensive gadgets we believe that we have equipped them with everything in life, but we have lost control of human and moral values— Hannah is left without any true friend, as every single person whom she has trusted left and betrayed her.
I’m not writing this to make anyone feel uncomfortable.
I’m not even writing this as an overall review of 13 Reasons Why, but wanted you people not lose its true essence behind the purpose of entertainment as it is a serious issue that faces by millions of people of every age and walk of life.
