India’s homegrown militancy & her attitude of denial

Denial of Home Grown Militancy In The Shadows of Blame Game Would Only Be Suicidal

“Denying The Obvious Is Preface To Suicide”

 Thomas Jefferson

Altruistic abstinence or plausible deniability Is a chronic disorder which has existed throughout the history of human psychology.

It is an affliction which drives an individual away from the prism of reality, into an abyss of negation which nurtures repudiation of mistakes and wrongdoings thus enabling the effected to find blame pots instead of rectifying its own delinquencies.

Modern Political Scientists such as John Aldrich have proposed that disorder of deniability travels along the hierarchy of a society gradually and subtly, therefore and if not confronted on socio-political level this disorder become embedded in state craft.

On the 18th day of September 2016 an Indian Army Brigade Headquarter at Uri in Indian Occupied Jammu & Kashmir came under attack by unidentified insurgents.

The attack as reported by the Indian press was the worst of its kind in nearly two decades. About two dozen soldiers belonging to the Dogra & Bihar Regiments of the Indian occupation forces succumbed to this fatal attack whereas dozens others were left injured.

Indian Press, government & opinion makers within minutes of this ravaging attack resorted to their traditional knee jerk reaction, which by this time has become a trademark of Indian society.

The blame of this assault was squarely put on Pakistan even before the counter insurgency operation was concluded & military compound could be cleared.

Responsible Indian ministers were seen throwing tantrums on live television as news anchors made war cries against Pakistan.

In this gut-wrenching display of absurdity & jingoism no sane voice was audible.

Indian jingoism was on the rise on the day

Sane voices either due to the fear of repercussions in Modi’s India or due the editorial control that Indian establishment exercises over its Media preferred silence.

One individual however displayed exceptional valor in these testing times and chose to opt for the truth rather than resort to the theatrics of self-styled nationalists, this individual was Ms. Barkha Dutt.

Dutt, who is a Consulting Editor of NDTV has been reporting for her “Kashmir Diaries” for the past six months boldly or rather in a fool-hardy manner, chose to call a spade a spade & rightfully asserted that this attack at Uri & many others like this are an outcome of a new wave of homegrown militancy that has nothing doing with any development across the LoC.

This new found zealotry in Kashmiri youth which has seen school and college toppers & academic achievers pick guns is a direct repercussion of the continued oppression in the valley.

Kashmiris, according to Ms. Dutt, without any support from Pakistan are more willing than ever to join the armed struggle for the achievement of their right to self-determination.

She also very rightly pointed out that this drastic assault was so precisely timed that it occurred on a day when rotation of troops was scheduled and a new infantry company was taking the charge over from an earlier stationed one.

This symphony of events is not reflective of a coincidence but indicates the presence of estranged elements within the Indian armed forces who are in cohoots with the militant forces.

This truth did not go down well with the Indian audience which resorted to slander, abuse & name-calling on social media. Ms. Dutts Twitter handle stands testimonial of this reaction which a lady would never deserve under any circumstances.

It is further appalling to see that even Indian ministers & members of Parliament felt duty bound to call Ms. Dutt a “dubious journalist” with “questionable credentials” instead of introspecting the reasoning & rational put forth by her.

This attitude of Indian intelligentsia & general public to an “Opinion Supplemented with Hard Facts” should be a matter of deep concern for anyone interested in peace & conflict Studies vis-a-vis South Asia.

It seems as if a nation of more 1 billion people along with its entire apparatus of the state is suffering from “denial disorder.”

Shying away from responsibilities and finding scapegoats is not only unbecoming of any self-respecting state, let alone a hegemonic India wishes to be.

India today is seeing a rapid rise in militancy with at least three dozen active & armed insurgent groups operating across its geographical axis.

Instead of redressal of genuine grievances of its population, improvement of political environment and enhancement of security measures, India has decided to make Pakistan a blame pot.

In case India is earnest regarding eradication of militancy and bringing peace and prosperity to its people, engagement with stake holders and putting an end to political apartheid for the people of Jammu & Kashmir is the only way forward.
