An Open Letter to Mayor of Karachi
Dear Sir,
As the local body election for Karachi has been ended quite peacefully, producing a clean contest with minor incidents which can happen considering Karachi`s populace. I am writing this letter to congratulate you on becoming the Mayor of Karachi. MQM blossoms as the clear winner of this marathon with a thumping majority over their opponents.
Sir, the residents of Karachi have bestowed their trust upon MQM and expecting their mandate would deal with all the problems which they are facing. As you are well aware of the fact that the level of expectations of residents are touching sky high, considering the precedents that were posted by last tenure of Syed Mustafa Kamal. The margin of MQM`s win is portraying the fact that the citizen of this megacity is demanding nothing less than the last term, undeniably the golden era of development.
Over the period, Karachi has significantly evolved from the blanket of terrorism and lawlessness to a degree of calmness; courtesy of the Karachi operation. At the same time, the infrastructure & basic facilities have been dropped dramatically, depriving citizen of their basic rights. The residents have long been marginalized due to provincial government lack of interest in this mega-polis. There are numerous problems which the city is currently facing but on the top are certain issues which need to be addressed at earliest. The water crisis, poor health services, traffic congestion, depleting road & transportation, solid waste management, & cleanliness are the issues that need to be sorted out once you take into the shoes of mayor-ship.
A sense of deprivation prevails amongst the citizen when they witness developments are being made in other cities of Pakistan. On one hand, Lahore is getting rapid transport services and newly paved roads, while Karachi is getting Qingqis and shaping into a garbage dump. I do hope that, Sir with your sincerity and efforts, the problems which we are dealing will be simplified to the best of our interest. If efforts are properly streamlined and the elected representatives vow to deliver then wonders are bound to happen. The losing charm of Karachi and its fading vibrancy will soon return.
It is also a reality that revised local body ordinance doesn’t empower a mayor; all the powers and authorities lie with the provincial government. However, you have the faith of public besides you. The faith will be the driving force and the mandate will sooner or later should come back to its elected member. I also request the provincial heads of the city, to be a part of this team, together it can be delivered.
Sir, there is a long journey which lies in-front of you. All the ingredients that are required to fulfill a promise are present in your backyard. Your contemporaries acknowledge your grass root support and network. It’s a golden opportunity for you & MQM to deliver and perform and distort the black spots & stigma which are associated with the party.
Regards
A Karachi resident
